Connecting Plankton, Mackerel, and Climate Change
By Jeffrey Runge, Ph.D.
GMRI Research Scientist, Biological Oceanography
Joint Appointment University of Maine School of Marine Sciences

This past year, I coauthored a paper published in the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. Ours was one of the first studies to show that more production of lower-level planktonic prey for larval mackerel leads to more young fish entering the mackerel fishery. This is a difficult concept to find evidence for in any marine fishery, and this study brings us closer to our goal of understanding the impact of climate change on fish populations.
