GMRI's model for collaborative research blends fishermen, scientists, and managers in a unique way that brings out the best in all stakeholders. The FishTank program, for example, allows for logical, coherent, and respectful presentation and discussion of complex issues. FishTank mirrors a larger paradigm that governs interactions with government agencies, academic institutions and industry - that finding a better way requires openness to new ideas and willingness to test them.

GMRI's exceptional science program is supported by an enthusiastic team of scientists encouraged by strong leadership that emphasizes advancing science AND making it relevant to real fishing problems. Recent efforts on cod tagging are but one example of research synthesis that is enabled by taking the long view. Fisheries science issues are rarely solved in one or two years. Rather they require a sustained commitment to secure funds, support and retain staff, and maintain communication with all partners. GMRI does all of these things well.
