How do the Herring and Lobster Fisheries Interact?

Jun 8, 2012
Spring 2012

Sigrid Lehuta, a Post-doctoral Research Associate at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, has a keen interest in understanding linkages within the marine ecosystem. She has been developing computer models that mimic the functioning of the Gulf of Maine's herring and lobster populations and their respective fisheries. This summer, she will run dynamic simulations to look at economic, regulatory, and environmental linkages between them. She will examine how changes in abundance and price may affect which bait lobstermen choose and the profitability of both fisheries. She will also explore how changes in the management of one fishery may affect outcomes in the other.

Lehuta noted, "These fisheries are currently managed independently. Understanding the interactions between them and with the environment will enable more effective management."
