Understanding Oyster Reefs
Oysters promote healthy estuaries by filtering water, cycling nutrients, and increasing the productivity and diversity of the ecosystem. However, during the past century, overfishing, disease, and poor water quality have depleted oyster reefs worldwide, and only about 15 percent remain. GMRI Scientist Jonathan Grabowski is part of a team of researchers, led by Marine Biologist David Kimbro of Florida State University, who are working to guide restoration of one of the world’s most devastated estuarine habitats. The project spans over 1,000 miles of the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico shoreline.
