Workshop Aims to Improve Assessments

Oct 2, 2015
2015 Issue 2

This November, GMRI will hold Taking Stock: A Workshop to Collaboratively Improve Stock Assessments. The workshop is the culmination of the Fish Tank meetings GMRI held this February through April (see cover story), and will bring together fishermen (commercial and recreational), scientists, and regulators to develop research priorities and projects to improve assessments. The workshop will explore current projects in the region that may contribute to and improve stock assessment processes, and will build new partnerships to act on research ideas that could fill current gaps, specifically those identified at the Fish Tank port meetings.

The workshop will be a great opportunity for industry and scientists alike to share their knowledge and ideas. There will be a strong presence from Northeast Fisheries Science Center and Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office staff, who have been highly committed to working with industry to improve stock assessment processes and communication throughout the Fish Tank meetings. Furthermore, we have invited funders to the workshop, to communicate emerging research priorities and encourage future partnerships.

Most importantly, we hope that this workshop acts as a step towards improving relations between and within the science community and industry. Instead of harping on the past, we hope to pursue action and innovation that will benefit fishermen, scientists, and managers alike. Taking Stock will be held November 9th and 10th at the Radisson Hotel in Plymouth, MA.
