Join us for a virtual gathering of middle school scientists sharing their work with each other and the larger scientific community.
We invite Middle School students and their teachers to join the Findings from the Field community by participating in a virtual research symposium. Findings is a community of middle school environmental and ecological scientists from across Maine and New Hampshire that produce a peer-reviewed journal each year. In this online symposium, students will join professional, college level, high school and middle school scientists to share findings, connect over experiences as scientists, and learn from each other’s work.

A-synchronous Participation Options
Contribute a Mini-poster: Students create a slide on a project or a question they are curious about related to ecology or environmental science (see example). Our community of peers, near peers, and professional scientists will comment and encourage these up-and-coming scientists.
Mini-poster Gallery “walk”: Explore the range of work in our scientific community by reviewing Mini-posters, gaining inspiration, and leaving comments and questions for the scientists.
Virtual Technology Share-a-thon: Students share a technology relevant to ecology or environmental science. Resources will be shared among all symposium participants.
Video recordings and Discussion Questions: Students watch and discuss recordings of the Near Peer and Professional Scientist panels.
Live Session Participation Options
Tuesday, February 9, 9:15-10am - Near Peer Panel: A panel of high school and college age environmental scientists will describe their scientific work and experiences as scientists. The panel will be followed by small group discussion in breakout rooms.
Tuesday, February 9, 1:00-1:45pm - Current Questions in Ecology and Environmental Science: This session will begin with an introduction to pressing questions in the fields of ecology and environmental science. Students will then join breakout rooms for small group discussion of these questions.
Wednesday, February 10, 9:15-10am - Professional Scientist Panel: A panel of professional scientists will describe projects they are working on and share what inspired them to become scientists. The panel will be followed by small group discussions in breakout rooms.
Wednesday, February 10, 1:00-1:45pm - Middle School Scientist Poster Session: Students will have the opportunity to see middle school science in action and provide encouraging feedback to their peers as they review and discuss student submitted Mini-posters. Note: students are welcome to participate in this session without making a Mini-poster to share.
