Ellen Grant

Chief Operating Officer

Ellen Grant joined GMRI as the Chief Operating Officer in 2011; in her role, she oversees the work of our three programmatic departments, Research, Education, and Community, as well as Finance and Administration.

She provides leadership in the implementation of GMRI’s strategic plan, and in upholding a culture of excellence by supporting GMRI’s highly talented staff in consistently achieving high levels of impact. Ellen has thirty years of executive experience in high-growth nonprofits both locally and abroad. Before coming to GMRI, she spent three years in Micronesia and the Eastern Caribbean providing management and organizational effectiveness consulting to conservation organizations through The Nature Conservancy.

Prior to that, she served as the Executive Director for the Institute for Civic Leadership for ten years, where she provided leadership training programs and consulting services. She also honed her skills in designing and facilitating large scale organizational and community engagement processes.

Ellen has a BA in Political Science from Colby College in Waterville, Maine and completed graduate courses in nonprofit management at Antioch New England. She has participated in a number of leadership development programs including a yearlong Adaptive Leadership program presented by the University of Southern Maine School of Business and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Other than her time abroad, Ellen has spent her life on the Gulf of Maine and is pleased to work with GMRI colleagues to catalyze solutions to the complex challenges of ocean stewardship and economic growth. She loves the four seasons of Maine and spends her free time in a variety of outdoor pursuits with her husband and other family members.
