Event Description

Climate change and sea level rise are already driving our high tides higher, causing coastal floods up and down the shores of Maine. In order to adapt, we need to increase our understanding of what water level and weather conditions lead to local flooding. That’s where you come in!

Join the Gulf of Maine Research Institute for a coastal meet-up to learn about sea level rise and coastal flooding, how to contribute your own observational data to the Coastal Flooding Community Science Project, and what you can do to support Portland in preparing for coastal change. The data from this project can be used to inform near- and long- term climate decisions and emergency preparedness, bringing us closer to a climate-resilient and thriving future.

Following the coastal meet-up, join us at SPACE Gallery from 4:30-6pm for a small reception where we will celebrate the inaugural showing of Envision Resilience: Designs for Living in a Changing Climate exhibition series, featuring innovative designs for resilient coastal infrastructure created by students participating in the 2025 Envision Resilience Portland and South Portland Challenge.

Envision Resilience works to advance innovative city planning and design in the face of climate change through student and community partnerships. By connecting current and future professionals working across disciplines, the organization creates opportunities for communities to reimagine climate challenges and inspire resilient solutions. Envision Resilience, originally developed by Remain, is part of the philanthropic organizations and initiatives created and funded by Eric and Wendy Schmidt to work toward a healthy, resilient, secure world for all.
