Scientist To Go with Dr. Barbara Spiecker
10 AMâ10:45 AM | Online | PrivateJoin Barbara as she discusses her exciting journey through marine ecology and how she uses science and data to protect marine ecosystems.

GMRI's Scientist To Go program allows for students to meet with a wide range of scientists and to learn a little bit more about what they do. These 45 minute sessions are made up of around 20â25 minutes of presenting from the scientist and around 15â20 minutes of questions and answers from students.
Scientist To Go presentations can highlight how the scientist ended up where they are today, what they are researching, and/or anything else that they want to highlight about their scientific career.
In this session of Scientist to Go we will hear from Barbara Spiecker, who once dreamed of becoming a historian, but life had other plans! Her journey took a surprising turn, leading her to become a marine ecologist and statistician. In this talk, sheâll share how her career path shiftedâfrom working in a hospital to a zoo, then diving underwater for field research, and even coding to protect coastal waters. Sheâs worked along the California coast and in the estuaries of New Hampshire and Maine, using science and data to understand and protect marine ecosystems.
We hope these presentations will expose students to a diverse group of scientists and science career paths, including both formal and informal science, and let them see science in ways that they may not get to do in a traditional classroom setting.
