Felipe Benavides
Postdoc Researcher
Felipe Benavides joined GMRI in March 2024. He is a Biologist from Colombia’s Universidad de Nariño in Colombia and earned his Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution from Universidad Austral de Chile. He delves into the world of data science and machine learning to tackle environmental issues and shares his expertise as a guest lecturer at universities across the Americas, spreading the love for science far and wide. In his research, Felipe collaborates with an interdisciplinary team spanning different institutions, including the Lab of Integrated Systems Ecology at GMRI, the Institute of Experiential Artificial Intelligence and the Sustainability and Data Sciences Lab at Northeastern University, and the Research Group of Hydrobiologic Resources at Universidad Nacional de Colombia-Palmira Campus. Felipe’s current projects include applying Computer Vision algorithms to improve the distribution modeling of the American Lobster in the Gulf of Maine, developing data science pipelines for machine learning-based seafloor mapping, and advanced Bayesian modeling to understand internal variability in Climate Models.
