Sophie Swetz

Marine Resource Education Program Manager, Greater Atlantic

Sophie Swetz joined GMRI in February of 2025 as the Program Manager for the Marine Resource Education Programā€™s Greater Atlantic Region. Before GMRI, Sophie worked at the Maine Department of Marine Resources, engaging with the fishing industry to implement the Departmentā€™s 100% lobster reporting initiative. Sophie also brings experience working in the private sector for an offshore wind company and environmental consulting firm, focusing on stakeholder engagement and natural resource damage assessments, respectively.

Sophie has a masterā€™s degree in Ocean Food Systems from the University of New England and a dual B.A. in Environmental Science (Marine Science Focus) and Science, Technology, and Society (STS) from Colby College. Her masterā€™s thesis focused on climate-driven shifts and expansions of commercially important fish stocks in the U.S. Northeast Shelf region and the associated challenges and opportunities presented to fishermen and managers. Sophie views fisheries as social-ecological systems that benefit from collaborative management among resource users, managers, and scientists. Outside of the office, Sophie enjoys skiing, SCUBA diving, biking, traveling, and cooking.
